Throughout the Northern Territory and South Australia we moved place to place, almost every night, which allowed us to see so many amazing places but we were beginning to feel a bit run down so we planned to relax somewhere for a few days near the mountains. When we found a small campsite with hot showers and a plug near The Grampians National Park in Victoria we felt it was a good fit, so we stayed there for 4 nights. The weather wasn’t ideal, quite damp and rainy but it gave us time to relax, enjoy the small mountain towns and the quirky people that managed the campground. The camp was set next to an unusual lake which had full size trees sticking out. Each day we drove to the park and hiked. The trails were really nice and scenic; however, we were a tad disappointed as many trails were closed due to a forest fire that occurred in February. After our stay near the park we drove down to the infamous Great Ocean Road! We knew the road was going to be scenic but we had no idea how beautiful the whole area is. The road is approximately 100 kms and runs directly next to the ocean with beautiful green farmland along the other side. The sections that aren’t directly next to the ocean are through lush forests and national park land. Not only is the drive spectacular but there is a popular hiking trail that snakes along the coast. The Great Ocean Trail is a 5 day hike. We had originally planned to hike it through, however once we were in the area we realized we didn’t have enough warm gear so instead we camped in the park at hiked from each campsite. The campgrounds are beautifully placed along the trail, are free of charge and even have bathrooms! We stayed at 2 different campgrounds and hiked sections of the trail from our campground. During one of our hikes Andrew was leading the leading way while I was in the back cautiously looking out on the trail for anything dangerous. We must not having been paying too much attention as a massive tiger snake started to slither out onto the path. I screamed and started backing up, Andrew bolted back and at the same time the snake got scared and recoiled into the bush. I was so freaked out and so happy camp was only 15 mins away from ....the longest 15 mins ever lol Once back at camp we washed some clothes, had a bucket shower, relaxed and begun making some dinner when all of a sudden we heard some rustling in the bushes. As I was on high snake alert I readied myself to jump into the car but firstly looked to see what it was I was happily surprised to see a mother Koala with her baby on her back walking right to us. Once she saw there were campers she climbed a small tree next to our tent, then when she realized she needed to get across the road to the gum trees she climbed down and headed through our camp. It was an awesome experience and we were so fortunate because later we found out they only move a few hours in the day and are usually very difficult to spot. After we had explored the GOR we headed to Bright a small town set in the Snowy Mountain Range. Bright is really well known with cyclists and paragliders. The video below describes why we visited Bright!
